Traditional Surgery
In addition to laser surgery, we also perform a wide variety of traditional surgery.

Surgeries Offered

  • Routine spays and neuters
  • Elective and emergency soft tissue surgeries
  • Orthopedic surgery, including spinal surgery and bone plating

Pre-anesthetic laboratory workup
We recommend an EKG and a blood profile prior to general anesthesia for your pet. This gives us a picture of the general health of your pet and is designed to pick up problems not evident on an external physical examination. If there is some internal problem that may pose a threat to your pet during anesthesia, we want to know about it before the anesthetic is given, not after!

Anesthesia
We have a wide variety of anesthetics available to maximize the safety of anesthesia for your pet, including Propofol and the newest, safest gas anesthesia, Sevoflurane. With the help of pre-anesthetic laboratory testing, the anesthetic protocol is adjusted to the individual needs and requirements of your pet.

Monitoring
All pets undergoing anesthesia and surgery are monitored by state-of-the-art vital signs monitors, which measure pulse oximetry (percent oxygen saturation of hemoglobin in the red blood cells), respiration, EKG, temperature, blood pressure.

Pain Control
At Warwick Animal Hospital, we are concerned with minimizing pain both during and following surgery. Ask one of our veterinarians which pain control regimen is appropriate for your pet.

Caution: Do not give any "people pain medicine" to your pet following a surgery! Human pain medication can be poisonous or can cause fatal bleeding in your pet! If your pet is on any pain medication, such as medication for arthritic pain, please let one of our veterinarians know before the surgery.

Referral Surgery
Complex surgeries can be referred to one of several surgical specialists in Tidewater
